Jim Smith of Grass Roots Engineering used a home-built 3D printer to craft what he calls the "world's first 3D-printed kayak." The kayak, which is made from ABS plastic is 16 feet, 8 inches long and weighs a little less than 65 pounds.
Each of the kayak's 28 color-coded sections was printed separately, then bolted together with machine screws and brass threaded inserts. To ensure that the kayak would be watertight, Smith used a bit of silicone caulk between the sections as well.
