VIDEO: World's First 3D-Printed Kayak

It's officially here... the world's first 3D-printed kayak! Created by Grass Roots Engineering, this boat is a revolutionary new way to kayak on the water.

Jim Smith of Grass Roots Engineering used a home-built 3D printer to craft what he calls the "world's first 3D-printed kayak." The kayak, which is made from ABS plastic is 16 feet, 8 inches long and weighs a little less than 65 pounds.

Each of the kayak's 28 color-coded sections was printed separately, then bolted together with machine screws and brass threaded inserts. To ensure that the kayak would be watertight, Smith used a bit of silicone caulk between the sections as well.

It took roughly 42 days to print all of the sections, but the kayak cost Smith only about $500 to make. And the best part? It actually floats!
