Tucked between two steep ridges, 6 miles up and down a dirt road and deep in a thick forest, sits Three Moose Lodge.
The lodge, which really is not a lodge, was built in 1947 on a secluded finger of Mitchell Lake in central Alabama, just a few miles from Flagg Mountain, the last named mountain in the Appalachians.
There are no moose in Coosa County (or anywhere else in Alabama), but if there were, this is where they would be. Forty thousand acres of wildlife management area and only 11 cabins make this an ideal place to see wildlife such as eagles, osprey and otter, as well as deer and turkey.

Three Moose (named such because “three moose” sounds better than “one, two or four moose”) is not a typical lake cabin. It is built on pilings above the lake and serves as a covered boat dock as well. One end of the cabin (the one that clings to the land) is 4–5 inches lower than the other end. Some might be bothered by
the sunken living room effect. I call it character.
To the outside world, Three Moose is accessible only by water. On the lodge I have hung many signs such as “ROOMS TO RENT,” “GAS,” “BEER” and “ICE,” so it is not uncommon for boaters to stop by and ask if the lodge is open. In fact, Three Moose Lodge is not a business and does not sell any of the items advertised. So, my answer is always “No, but come on in anyway!” I have met many delightful people by doing so.
Inside, the walls and tables are covered with interesting memorabilia and collectibles. Visitors often notice moose-related items, from jiggers to jugs. Much of the moose-themed collection has been supplied by former guests.
Three Moose Lodge is a unique hideaway in a beautiful area of Alabama. The only thing missing is the moose.
