Black-Capped Chickadee (Parus atricapillus)
Diminutive and active, this little insect- and nut-eater is very social — with humans, as well as other birds. Despite its small size, it packs a loud whistle. Several species of chickadees live in a wide range across the United States and Canada. Though it will also feed on seeds, nuts, fruits and berries, its main food focus is insects found on mature trees, both conifers and deciduous. And because it feeds on the eggs as well as adults, it is excellent at keeping all kinds of trees safe from some very nasty bugs.
Pro-Tip
Grow royal or cinnamon ferns. Adult chickadees will use the fronds as a soft lining for their nests.
