It was exciting for me to watch the five-week Best Cabin Region Contest unfold in February and March 2015, especially since I’ve edited stories about most of the regions and visited several. Of the 32 regions that competed, I’ve had the pleasure of visiting:
  • Pinetop-Lakeside, Ariz. As a young boy, I camped, fished, swam and skied in Arizona’s White Mountains.
  • Vilas County, Wis. I attended a wedding at a lakeside cabin in this area. What a beautiful event.
  • Hayward Lakes area, Wis. I enjoyed a sunrise photo shoot on a lake here with friend and Cabin Life contributor Steve Umland.
  • Upper Peninsula, Mich. A friend and I drove through the UP during a circle tour of Lake Superior. My salient memory: Seeing a towering snow depth indicator (aka the Keweenaw Snow Thermometer) on the side of the road. The UP knows snow!
  • Puget Sound, Wash. One of my best business trips ever was visiting a coworker who owned a vacation home on Orcas Island with her husband.
  • Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Swimming in cool, crystal-clear Lake Coeur d’Alene on a hot summer day in 1981 was amazing.
  • Table Rock Lake, Mo. If you ever visit Big Cedar Lodge, I recommend the rustic, but elegant, guest cabins.
  • Lake of the Ozarks, Mo. When my boss asked me to work at a consumer show in Osage Beach, I jumped at the chance. (I know, tough duty.)
  • Leech Lake, Minn. I’ve run the Walker North Country Marathon twice. Much of it is on rolling woodland trails.
  • Brainerd Lakes, Minn. And the last is first. My introduction to cabin living was at my grandparents’ place on the Gull Lake Chain about 50 years ago. I am eternally grateful.
Thank you to all who participated in the contest.

The cabin enthusiasts in all 32 regions are winners in my book. To enjoy the cabin lifestyle is truly a treasure.
