From the Editor: Connected by Cabins

Renting a Nifty Nook Resort cabin on Minnesota’s Otter Tail Lake for a week in the summer was an annual family tradition that my wife, Carol, recalls fondly from her childhood. Now that Carol and her three sisters are grown and have their own families, the Nifty Nook pilgrimage is no longer. But there’s still a strong cabin tradition in the family.
Not only do three of the four Finkelson daughters own cabins with their husbands, but one weekend every summer, we gather at one of those cabins for a reunion. (I’ve dubbed it the “Finkelson Family Fun Weekend,” or the “Triple-F W,” because I can’t resist alliteration. The name “Nifty Nook,” however, I cannot take credit for.)
    What is it about the soul of the cabin experience that makes it so powerful that it spans generations for families like my wife’s? It’s connection – outwardly with family, friends and nature, and inwardly with the best parts of ourselves.
    This rings true for the stories told in every issue of Cabin Life. Even when an article appears to focus on a cabin, the real story is about the people within the cabin and the connections they make. In this issue, such stories include:
