Fans of flea markets or architectural salvage stores know that they’re positively teeming with interesting old doors of all shapes and sizes. The only problem is, unless you have just the right spot in your home, there’s very little you can actually do with these old doors.

At our local Habitat for Humanity ReStore, for example, we found the great-looking door for this project. In a former life, it was actually half of a pair of French doors. We were unsure what to do with it at first, but after a bit of brainstorming, we realized its surface area just happened to be the perfect size for a computer desk.

Some store-bought steel legs, a glass top, and a few embellishments later, we had a stylish, contemporary desk that would look right at home in any home office. Pick up your own door this weekend, see the steps and style tips on the following pages, and you can do it, too!

From Door to Desk

The steps for preparing your own door may vary from what we did with ours, but these instructions will give you a good general guideline of how to turn a door into a desk.

Prepare the Door.

To prep our door, we removed the hardware, sanded, applied stain, and cleaned the glass. We also trimmed the ends and edges with a circular saw and nailed casing to the edges for a finished look.

Finish the Look.

Next, we frosted the glass with a spray finish. Then we added store-bought steel legs and glass to complete the desk.
