Cabin Fever Cures

It’s bound to happen. Not every day at the cabin can be sunny and cloud-free. Sooner or later the heavens will open, and the downpour will begin. Rather than everyone sulking and turning on the television, here are some activities you can do with the kids that will keep them active and using their imaginations. In this electronics age, it’s easy to forget old-fashioned fun. Remind yourself with these classic, surefire cures for cabin fever. All it takes is a little bit of preparation on your part.
  • Homemade Sock Puppet Show: Either buy or collect items like glitter, sequins, ribbons and buttons (but beware of small objects that could pose a choking hazard for young children). Store them along with glue, scissors, markers and other craft supplies in a “Puppet Box.” Once the rain starts to fall, pull out the box and some (clean) old socks and join your kids in the fun!
  • Build a Fort: Gather up old sheets, blankets and comforters and drape them over furniture, using ribbons and clothespins to secure the fabric. Give your kids battery-operated lanterns, sleeping bags, books and snacks and let them pretend they’re in the outdoors — in the living room!
  • Play Dress-up: Gather interesting old clothes items from around the house and from dollar stores and thrift shops and keep them in a plastic storage bin at the cabin. When the weather turns sour, the whole family can put on a costume and let their imaginations run wild!
