Outdoor furniture is more comfortable than ever, thanks in large part to newer outdoor fabrics. They’re made with synthetic materials, like spun polyester and acrylic, which won’t soak up rain or dew or the spray from a hose. And they hold their color relatively well, resisting sun fade. Even so, there’s no way to protect your cushions from dust, so they’ll really last longest if you stow them away to protect them when they’re not in use.
If you’re buying a cushion or pillow, read the tag to see what it’s filled with. After all, it won’t do you any good to have a fabric that doesn’t absorb water if the stuffing inside soaks it up like a sponge. Both polyester fill and polyurethane foam are water-resistant.
Every once in a while, hose off your upholstered pieces and wash them with a mild soap. If they get really bad, you can even clean them with a mild bleach solution to kill off mildew and freshen up a dirty surface.
