Design Ideas: Nautical Motifs

No matter where your cottage is located, including elements of seafaring design can be fresh and fun

When my father started wood carving about 18 years ago, one of the first figurines he made was a fisherman in a bright yellow raincoat and hat with black galoshes. A small pipe was ever-present sticking out of its mouth. This delightful character encouraged my mother to turn our den into a nautical-themed escape.

Take a look at the designs here to encourage your own creativity. Feel comforted with a driftwood bed or whimsical with a ship designed right into your place. Transform any room with small touches or grand designs.

Add built-in benches with wooden backs and a long table (this one’s made from a reclaimed bowling lane) to turn a dining nook into a cozy space reminiscent of a messroom on a ship. Repurposed, aged and battered wide-plank floors and a wood-paneled ceiling make the space feel even more authentic. Build shelves and drawers for storage (it’s likely this boat will not rock), and add a small, skinny pendant light and perhaps an antique find to finish off the space.
