Photo by Steven Lankford On October 15-17, 2010, the National Dock Dogs Championships were held in Dubuque, Iowa. And the star of the show was a dog named Baxter who – with a little help from his owner, Tony Lampert of St. Louis, Mo. – took first place in the Big Air category. How big, you ask? Baxter’s winning leap was 27 feet, 7 inches. That’s longer than four 2010 Toyota Corollas parked bumper to bumper. To compare, the World Track & Field Record in the (human) long jump is 29 feet, 4 ½ inches. And that’s not all, Baxter also took first place in the Extreme Air category and was selected as the 2010 Iron Dog by the Dock Dogs, the independent governing and sanctioning body for regional, national, and international dock jumping performance sport for dogs. Baxter is a two-year old Belgian Malinois. What a good boy!
