From the Editor: A Dream is Born

It’s fascinating to hear what gets people started down the road to cabin ownership. Sometimes, the dream is born during a delightful childhood experience at a relative’s or friend’s cabin. For some, it’s a matter of trading up: Years of camping in a tent leads to vacationing in a camper, which leads to a cabin. For others, they try cabin living by renting a place on a mountain or beside a lake or river, and they are so smitten they decide to buy a place. And there are many other possibilities, all with a common thread: a love for the outdoors.

In the May 2014 issue of Cabin Life, you’ll learn how Phil and Kate Barker achieved their cabin dream. For Phil, the seed was planted during his childhood when he spent summers at his grandfather’s island cabin. Read all about Phil and Kate’s cabin in “Hooked on Logs,” p. 24.

As you’ll see in her story, “Roots in the Treetops” (p. 20), Diane Jacobson and her husband were motivated to search for a cabin by their desire to escape from the bustle of their daily lives in the San Francisco area. And, in an interesting twist, Diane decided to build a tree house for their son because of her fond tree house memories from her childhood.

And then there’s Diane Bradley. She and her husband love fishing, so they sought a lakeside cabin where they could indulge their passion for angling. There’s a lot more to Diane’s cabin dream, as you’ll see when you read “The ‘Write’ Cabin,” p. 21.
